Child & Parent Estrangement Counseling in Longwood, FL

Support for the distance between a parent and an adult child, whatever side of it you're on. In my Longwood office or by secure video across Florida.

When a Parent and Child Grow Apart

Estrangement between a parent and an adult child is one of the most quietly painful experiences a family can carry. Unlike a death, there is no clear ritual for grief. Unlike a fight, there may be no obvious path to repair. You may find yourself cycling between longing and confusion, replaying conversations, wondering what you missed, and mourning not only the relationship you had but the future you imagined together.

I work with parents grieving a child who has gone quiet, and with adult children who have stepped back from a parent to protect their own wellbeing. Both experiences are real, and neither one is a script where one side is simply right.

As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Longwood, FL, serving families throughout Winter Springs, Lake Mary, and Oviedo, I help you sort through the guilt, anger, longing, and relief that can all surface at once, and think honestly about what boundaries, repair, or peace might look like for you.

Common Questions About Estrangement Counseling

Why does adult child estrangement happen?

Estrangement rarely has a single, simple cause. It may stem from accumulated unresolved conflict, differences in values or lifestyle, perceived slights that grew over years, a partner's influence, mental health challenges on either side, or events that were deeply hurtful to the adult child — whether or not they were intended that way. In many cases, parents and children hold genuinely different memories of the same events. Understanding this does not assign blame; it opens the door to empathy, which is often the first step toward any possibility of reconciliation.

Is reconciliation always possible?

Not always — and accepting that is one of the hardest parts of this journey, for parents and adult children alike. Reconciliation requires willingness on both sides, and neither party can control the other's choices. What you can control is your own healing, your readiness to listen without defensiveness if an opening ever comes, and the quality of the life you build in the meantime. Counseling can help you hold both the hope for reconnection and the strength to find peace if it doesn't come.

How do I cope with the social stigma and the silence?

Many parents can't speak honestly about estrangement because of shame, fear of judgment, or simply not knowing how to explain it. Friends and family often mean well but offer advice that misses the mark — "just reach out," "give it time," "you must have done something." A space where you're neither judged nor rushed can bring real relief. Some parents also find comfort connecting — privately, on their own terms — with others who've walked this road. You're not the only parent in this situation, even when it feels that way.

Should I keep trying to make contact?

There is no single right answer, and the right approach often depends on the specific dynamics of your relationship. Some adult children need space before they feel ready to reconnect; repeated contact can feel intrusive and may deepen the distance. Others respond over time to a low-pressure, consistent expression of love. A counselor can help you think through what you know about your child, what you want to communicate, and how to do so in a way that keeps the door open without causing further harm.

How can counseling help me through this?

Counseling provides a grounded, confidential space to process the grief and confusion estrangement brings. Together, we can explore the emotions you are carrying — guilt, anger, sadness, disbelief — and work through them at a pace that feels manageable. Life coaching adds a forward-looking dimension: identifying what a meaningful, fulfilling life looks like for you now, and taking gentle steps toward it. The goal is not to help you forget your child, but to help you live fully while carrying the love and the loss with more ease.

What if I am also dealing with anxiety or depression as a result?

It is very common for estrangement to trigger or worsen anxiety and depression. The chronic uncertainty, the grief, and the isolation can weigh heavily on mental and physical health. Addressing these symptoms is not a distraction from the estrangement — it is part of healing it. When you are better resourced emotionally, you are also better placed to navigate any future contact with your child from a position of groundedness rather than desperation or reactivity.

Do you work with both parents and adult children?

Yes. I support parents navigating a child's silence and adult children who have chosen distance from a parent. I don't assume either side is at fault; I help each person make sense of their own experience.
